Our respite care service supports family carers across a wide range of situations. You may benefit from respite care if:
Respite care can begin as quickly as 24β48 hours in urgent situations. Standard planned respite is typically arranged within 2β3 working days of a free assessment.
We offer three main types of respite care, each designed to suit different family circumstances and levels of need.
Regular, recurring respite visits arranged as part of a planned schedule β for example, every Tuesday afternoon or every other weekend. Planned respite gives family carers a reliable, predictable break they can count on each week.
Best for: Family carers who need a consistent regular break built into their routine.
Temporary respite care arranged to cover a specific period β such as a family holiday, a medical appointment, a work commitment or a period of recovery from illness. Visits are tailored to your loved one's care needs throughout the duration of cover.
Best for: Family carers planning a holiday, facing a temporary absence or managing a short-term personal commitment.
Urgent respite cover arranged at short notice when a family carer is suddenly unable to provide care due to illness, a family emergency or carer crisis. We respond as quickly as possible to ensure your loved one is never left without the support they need.
Best for: Sudden, unexpected situations where immediate cover is essential.
Respite care visits are tailored entirely to your loved one's existing care plan and personal preferences. Our carers follow the routine you have established β with warmth, consistency and genuine care.
We understand that for many older adults and people living with dementia, disruption to routine can cause genuine distress. That is why we approach every respite placement with meticulous attention to the existing routine β not our standard template.
Before respite care begins, we take a thorough handover from the family carer covering every detail of the daily routine, personal preferences, likes and dislikes, health conditions and care approaches. Our carers follow this to the letter.
Respite care works best when it fits naturally around the family carer's needs. We offer a wide range of visit options so that the break you take is genuinely restful.
Daytime Visits

Full-Day Cover
All-day support from morning through to evening, giving family carers a complete day away
Overnight Respite
Sleep-in or waking night cover so family carers can rest through the night without worry
Regular Weekly Respite
A fixed weekly slot β same day, same time β providing predictable, reliable relief each week
Extended Respite
Multi-day or multi-week cover for holidays, work trips or longer periods of recovery
Minimum visit length: 30 minutes
Recommended for respite: 2β4 hours per visit or longer
Standard planned respite can typically begin within 2β3 working days of a completed free assessment.
In urgent situations where a family carer is suddenly unable to care for their loved one, we will do everything possible to arrange emergency respite within 24 hours of your call.
As well as providing respite care for your loved one, we recognise that family carers themselves often need support, guidance and signposting to the right services. Our team is always happy to help.
Carer's Assessment
You have the right to a free Carer's Assessment from Essex County Council, which may entitle you to funded support including respite care. We can advise you on how to request one.
Carers UK & local support groups
We can signpost family carers across the UK to local and national support organisations, peer groups and helplines.
Direct payments guidance
If you or your loved one receives a direct payment from Essex County Council, we can help you understand how this can be used to fund respite care.
GP referrals
If you are experiencing carer burnout, physical health problems or mental health difficulties as a result of your caring role, we encourage you to speak with your GP. We can support the conversation if needed.
Respite care can be funded in several ways. We are happy to help you explore the options β though we do not provide formal financial advice.
You arrange and fund respite care directly. Full costs are discussed transparently during the free assessment.
If Essex County Council has assessed your loved one as eligible, a direct payment may fund some or all of the respite care.
A Carer's Assessment by Essex County Council may result in funded respite support for the family carer. This is separate from the care recipient's own assessment.
For those with a primary health need, respite support may be fundable through NHS Continuing Healthcare, subject to eligibility.
